DNA is published for the first time in the Methuen Drama Student Edition series with commentary and notes by Clare Finburgh Delijani, which look at the play's context, themes, dramatic form, staging possibilities and production history, plus offers suggestions for further reading.
It incorporates creative and reflective tasks and devices, to help them make sense of the play for themselves. I have followed comments upon the play with questions that should stimulate anindividual response to the characters and the plot.
The students should comment on their understanding of the characters, themesand ideas explored in the play by using point, evidence, explain and bycommenting upon language, dramatic devices and the significance of the way inwhich the play is structured or put together. An approach for achieving a high grade that has worked well with my ownstudents has been to give them a list of questions to think about while readingthe play.
Some questions will generate insights for them and I encourage eachpupil to not the question, their answer and any quotations that support that. Some effort needs to be made to learnthe quotations, and I suggest a strategy for that. I also detail dramatic effects as they are used in the play, and it is will beimportant for students to be able to understand what these are, remember thenames, and comment anthem in the examination where this is relevant to thequestion.
My advice for using these notes is to read through the play a scene at a time, then read the appropriate section of the notes and try to answer the questionsand not any supporting quotations. They will be looking for that to award a top grade. This study companion, designed for teachers looking for insight into the play, goes beyond conventional revision guides to provide detailed commentary on the play's themes, characters, messages and values, alongside an in-depth plot synopsis with commentary.
It also offers a number of teaching ideas and activities as well as tips on answering an exam question. Dennis Kelly is one of the UK's finest contemporary dramatists. Also features a foreword by journalist, author and critic, Aleks Sierz. Easy to use in the classroom or as a tool for revision, Oxford Literature Companions provide student-friendly analysis of a range of popular GCSE set texts.
Each book offers a lively, engaging approach to the text, covering characters, themes, language, performance and contexts, whilst also providing a range of varied and in-depth activities to deepen understanding and encourage close work with the text. Each book also includes a comprehensive Skills and Practice section, which provides detailed advice on assessment and a bank of exam-style questions and annotated sample student answers.
The four plays in this first collection by Dennis Kelly are linked by their characters' desperate need to believe that there is more to life than the often brutal worlds in which they find themselves.
Kelly's remarkable debut Debris finds humour and pathos in a spectacularly dysfunctional family unit. The harrowing Osama the Hero shows a group of neighbours taking ill-defined revenge on an odd-ball teenager in a climate of fear.
In After the End a woman discovers she has been rescued from Armageddon by a paranoid ex-colleague with a nuclear bunker in his garden. And in a fractured narrative Love and Money portrays a marriage driven to brutal destruction by financial pressures.
